Notice...The role of Brittany is also important her. Notice Brittany threw Santana a life line first to get out of her curious and unhealthy relationship with her feelings.

You should do a series on Brittany but that would be hard because she is unbelievably even less fleshed out than Santana by the negligent writers. Really there is just a beautiful story there waiting to be mined if their backstory was ever fleshed out.

Brittany plays a greater role than most realize. She's smarter than most realize - she just flies under the radar and cracks jokes.

She is the one who initiated a relationship with Santana not the other way around - so many people seem to think Santana gave the chase when it's really the other way around.

http://ryureblog.tumblr.com/post/13663455988/dont-underestimate-brittanyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1583232612899692330.post-35025709516217995872011-12-04T09:50:40.850-05:002011-12-04T09:50:40.850-05:00I find it hard to read any meaning into a time whe...I find it hard to read any meaning into a time when the writers really were not paying any mind to Santana's emotions as a character and just tossed her about as they liked.

But I do agree with you on these two principles of Santana's character. 1) This will probably happen less and less now that she's out, but the importance is in what she doesn't say. 2) You're right - at least until this new relationship with Brittany, she did think more with her mind, not her heart.

I attribute this mostly to the ill effects of the (armored)closet. As you said in the last post, she was constantly scheming to keep people away from her true self and her big secret - she didn't like all the boys she'd dated.

Of course this wasn't fooling Brittany. They both saw each other as they truly were - beyond the facade of mean girl and dumb girl - and fell in love.

Before, Santana had only needed to think logically with her head. She was suppressing her gayness and saw her straight hook-ups as calculated maneuvers to get to the top. There was no emotions or love to it. Brittany changed that. Hence the sudden change in Santana's character. Now she gets to show more of her feelings, particularly her feelings for Brittany.

At least that is how I see it. Still waiting for the canon to catch up.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1583232612899692330.post-51133164939697993762011-04-18T11:42:45.365-04:002011-04-18T11:42:45.365-04:00"Santana’s relationship with love is tragic a..."Santana’s relationship with love is tragic and fascinating in that she desperately wants it, but has too low a self-worth to be convinced that she can receive it - and too opposed to vulnerability to always embrace it."
Beautiful. Heartbreaking and tragic, but like you said, absolutely fascinating. In my opinion, Santana Lopez is the most complex character on the show. I really hope the writers do her justice now that she's being moved more and more into the spotlight.Aoifenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1583232612899692330.post-59597026670640147982011-04-17T16:58:30.163-04:002011-04-17T16:58:30.163-04:00I think the root of most of Santana's issues i...I think the root of most of Santana's issues is her lack of self esteem and her feelings of being inadequate. If she believed she was lovable, then she would be more open to love and not so afraid of opening up. Instead, she obsessively holds on to power because if people weren't afraid of her, then they would see her inadequacies and humiliate her for them, which just terrifies her.Nathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03893874483891073551noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1583232612899692330.post-6941986633275766542011-04-16T22:49:38.245-04:002011-04-16T22:49:38.245-04:00I totally agree with what you're saying. I truly admire you're ability and skills to dictate what you believe and why you believe it. You inspired me so much to get a Tumblr to follow you. After checking out the rest of Glee fandom I just have to say, you are by far the most intelligent and down-to-earth person I've found online.fairytales911https://www.blogger.com/profile/18018347829968337125noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1583232612899692330.post-44689801836915793562011-04-16T22:45:16.672-04:002011-04-16T22:45:16.672-04:00Nice catch with the song choices, especially with ...Nice catch with the song choices, especially with the second tier characters they are more carefully thought out, I think. She and Puck have that in common at least. Poor Santana. I thought the fact that she is weepy when drunk or vulnerable had some meaning but never quite put it together. She has so many emotions and so many reactions but rarely puts them into words.

This is an aside but interesting to note, I was rewatching "Home" (Which dreamy Brad Falchek directed and wrote) and during Beautiful, the camera spent a great deal of time on Santana before returning to Mercedes, well before the boob job and in an episode that Santana, except for importing the knowledge of the Cheerio diet drink, had very little to do with. A ironic coincidence, at least, I think.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1583232612899692330.post-92063764350562461762011-04-16T22:40:10.422-04:002011-04-16T22:40:10.422-04:00I like what you say about Santana having so many e...I like what you say about Santana having so many emotions because I think it's true. Santana's speech to Brittany was similar in some ways to Naomi's speech to Emily at the end of the 4th series of Skins and I always thought that Naomi's being afraid of loving Emily because she knew that Emily was the one person who could destroy her was true of Santana, too. It's not just being gay that she's afraid of, it's also just love in general.

And it's something I think she has in common with Quinn. Quinn may date but she only dates guys she has a firm measure of control over and that control generally comes out of the fact that she doesn't feel all that much for them. And maybe that's why she's spent all season avoiding Puck - because she knows he has the ability to crush her where someone like Sam or like Finn doesn't.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
